This appears to be the 1948 Music Camp group performing in the bowl at the free Sunday concert. I recognize Howard Ruff in the back row of the chorus 6th from the left. Virginia…the blond in the percussion section. Is that Frances Tomlinson from La Jolla? Quite a few who repeated all three years.

Wish I could find a list of names amongst my dad’s papers. ljs

For 6 weeks during the summers of 1948, 49, and 50 Pine View Lodge became “A Heaven On Earth for the talented young musician serious about his music.” Noted guest conductors and an accomplished staff teamed up under the direction of Leonard “Skipper” Steimle

Section work and instruction during the week at scattered outdoor locations amidsts the pines and cedars led to orchestra and chorus practices in the lodge, all in preparation for free “Symphonies ‘Neath the Pines” in the Arrowhead Bowl on Sundays.

Were you there? Let us know. Larry Steimle lsteimle@altrionet.com

In January 1942 my parents, Leonard “Skipper” and Margery Steimle purchased from Pacific Electric Company the PE employee vacation camp near Blue Jay, California. It consisted basically of 40 cabins, a lodge, swimming pool and several out buildings located on a beautifully wooded 20 acres between Blue Jay and Agua Fria on highway 89. The slogan was: Families with Children Preferred

The first name chosen for the camp was Beverly Pines. Skipper had taught several years at Beverly Hills High School. Around 1944 the name was changed to Pine View Lodge, by which it was known until our father died in 1974. It…
